Choosing your first weights
Why we start with 3, 5 and 8 pounds.
For most beginner moves, a pair of 3 pound weights is plenty. Do ten slow repeats of a curl or a shoulder press and see how the last three feel.
If the last repeats feel easy, move up to the 5 pound pair. The 8 pound pair is for squats, deadlifts and rows, where your legs and back do more of the work.
Keep your elbows soft, your wrists straight and your breathing steady. Stop a move if it hurts, and ask a qualified professional if you are unsure.
